Garone: Pinning Down Success
X-Cel Worldwide President and CEO Nick Garone has quickly put a chokehold on a reputation as one of professional boxing’s most promising new promoters. A native of Patchogue, New York, Garone has a Master’s Degree in Communications from Syracuse University where he wrestled on a full scholarship. Among his numerous wrestling distinctions, he was a Division I All-American and an Olympic alternate for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. By having such accomplishments in a sport so similar to boxing, Garone says he is better able to empathize with his fighters. “I think what helps me relate to these guys is that I was an athlete. I know what it is to run in the morning and to have to lose weight. I was at the top of what I did at one point. Not many people can say that. I’m coming from the athlete’s point of view, but I’m educated as well. I can negotiate for my guys in a very professional way, but I can also relate when they’re frustrated and down. I have a champion’s mentality and that helps me with these guys and gives me the vision of what they’re going through. The aggression required to head into battle with a snarling Russian strongman is a handy tool to have when faced with intimidation, or underhanded tactics, from some of boxing’s bigger players. “This is a tough business; it’s not for the weak. I go to war for my guys. I have to make tough decisions every day based on what’s best for my fighters. They go to war inside the ring; I go outside; I‘m very tenacious.” Garone’s X-Cel Worldwide has already amassed an impressive stable of all-action boxers, including former NABF Heavyweight Champion and world #1 contender “Big” Michael Grant, as well as former 2x world super middleweight champion Byron “Slama From Bama” Mitchell and once-beaten Colorado super lightweight Adrian Mora to name a few. “They’re all hardworking guys and I have a strong commitment to helping them. I look forward to the future with these guys.” Garone says X-Cel Worldwide is looking to stage shows all over North America, featuring their stable of boxers against world-class opponents. “We’re going to create our own opportunities. I decided to start promoting, because then instead of dealing with people that don’t care about the well-being of my fighters, I’ll be keeping everything in-house. We’re like a family.”
