Byron Mitchell made his professional debut in 1996 and won 19 straight fights before taking the WBA world super middleweight championship from Fankie Liles via TKO 11 in 1999.
Six months later, Mitchell defended successully against Bruno Girard, but lost the title via decision in a rematch with Girard in April 2000.
In March of 2001, Mitchell got the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBA belt and made the most of it by knocking out Manny Siaca.
Mitchell successfully defended the belt in a rematch with Siaca and then a second time via KO over Julio Cesar Green.
In 2003, he lost the title via controversial split decision in a unification fight agaisnt then IBF champion Sven Ottke. In his next fight, he had all-time-great Joe Calzaghe on the deck for the first time in his career before being stopped somewhat prematurely in round two.
Mitchell had only one fight in five years after that, before signing a promotional contract with X-Cel Worldwide and embarking on a comeback in 2008.
Now competing at light heavyweight, Mitchell is undefeated since hooking up with promoter Nick Garone and won the NABA-USA Light Heavyweight Championship via KO over Zach Walters in February 2009.
As an amateur, Mitchell was the three-time Alabama State Golden Gloves Champion, the 1996 National Gloves Champion, and a Olympic Trials Bronze Medallist. His final record was 102-14.
