Meacher "Major Pain" Major
Meacher Major started his boxing career in October of 1994 under the watchful eye of coach and trainer, Ray Minus Jr.
Major had a stellar amateur career, representing the Bahamas at the highest levels of the sport. He was the Bahama Games Gold medalist and a two-time Carifta Games Gold medalist, as well.
In 1996 & 1999 he was awarded the "Boxer of the Year" and also took part in the Pan Am Games, qualifying tournament where he won a bronze medal. He did not attend the Pam Am games because of an injury, but later competed in the Olympic qualifier in Tampa, Florida, and then again in Mexico.
After his accomplished amateur career he made his pro debut on October 28, 1999, in the Bahamas, where he scored a second round TKO against Juan Trevino.
After winning his next fight, Major suffered his first pro loss to former world title challenger Edner Cherry. He then won his next six fights when he lost a hard-fought split decision to highly regarded and undefeated Lamont Peterson.
In 2005 Major won the vacant Bahamian Title and then added the WBA FedeCaribe Lightweight title in 2006 with an exciting first-round TKO over Luis Couoh from Mexico. He was then honored by being named, "Boxer of the Year," in the Bahamas.
Major has signed with X-Cel Worldwide and is looking forward to becoming a world champion under his new promotional banner. He is the proud father of Schemia Major.

World Rated Major Fights for NABA Title!

One of the two local-based front-line professional boxers is down for the count but the other is headed for an important date, November 6, when he hopes to make a serious statement.
Jermaine Mackey, up to last Friday, was the Commonwealth Boxing Council Super Middleweight Champion. His status was unique in that he was the only Caribbean boxer at that level. An unfortunate fifth round stoppage by Adonis Stevenson has resulted in him being sidelined for very likely, the rest of 2009 and perhaps several months into 2010.
On the other hand, Meacher Major, ranked No. 14 on the World Boxing Association's list of top lightweights, will try to use Dorin Spivey to step closer to a world title fight. The fight will take place at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in Buffalo, New York. Meacher with his entertaining style is developing folk hero status in Buffalo. In his last outing, he crushed Michael Clarke. Now he's out to steam roll Spivey.
"I have nothing against anybody, but I have a job to do. I want to get a title fight and right now I'm on that mission. I just have to keep moving opponents out of he way until I'm in the ring fighting for a title," said Major. With just three defeats in 20 fights, Major is poised and ready to continue along the path to a world championship fight. He is disappointed about the outcome of the Mackey/Stevenson fight.
"I really feel for him. He had such an opportunity and now it's gone, at least for now. His situation is even more reason for me to be very focused and careful about the decisions being made. It's so important to make the right decisions in this business. A lot of offers are made but not all are good opportunities. Promoters in putting shows together are looking out for themselves, so the fighters have to do the same and not just take any match if it is not the best at the time for them," stated Major.
An exception to the rule, Major is a boxer who thinks for himself. His manager on official record, Nick Garone, understands that.
"I like this kid. He has the right mindset. He is an outstanding fighter and human being. I enjoy our relationship," said Garone recently. Also, the President of X-Cel Worldwide, Garone hopes to steer Major to the top. They make a good team.
Major is very well positioned and patient. At 27, he realizes that the time is now. I like the way he, Garone and trainer Nat Knowles are moving. He should beat Spivey, whose record is solid at 35-6. If he is successful against Spivey, he could close out 2009 with a possible No. 12 rank or better. A couple of wins chalked up in early 2010 could land him solidly in the top 10. It is indeed a good pace the Meacher Major camp has. Best wishes to the group. |
