BOXING: Casal set to fight Nov. 6

By Nate Beutel
Niagara Gazette

When Nick Garone was managing fighters, Nick Casal was with Shelly Finkel. When Garone switched to promotion, Casal was with Gary Shaw.

Now with Casal a free agent, Garone swooped right in.

“It seems like in the past we’ve just missed each other,” Garone said by phone Wednesday. “Now we’re finally in a position to work together and help each other out. I’m excited for both sides. I see a lot of potential for this partnership.”

Casal, a Niagara Falls light welterweight, signed a deal with Garone’s company, X-Cel Worldwide, this past weekend. His first fight under contract is set for Nov. 6 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Casal will be the main event.

“I think this is a perfect fit,” Casal said. “I have a good relationship with Nick and he really takes care of his fighters. I really like that he has a blueprint for me.”

Garone, who has a home in Youngstown, said he plans to showcase Casal on his next few cards in Western New York. By next March he’d like to get Casal a regional title bout and if all goes well, a “meaningful fight to get back in title contention by the end of 2010.”

Casal, 23, is currently 19-4-1 with 15 knockouts during his career.

“He still has a lot of untapped potential in the game because he’s so young,” Garone said. “Hopefully I’m the guy that helps bring that out of him.”

The signing of Casal also brings respected Falls trainer Ray Casal, Nick’s father, into the fold.

“Ray is a tremendous asset,” Garone said. “He’s a very talented trainer and we have a great relationship. He really has Nick’s best interests at heart, which is huge in this equation.”

Casal recently began his camp for the Nov. 6 bout and plans to be fully prepared for the hometown crowd.

“I’m anxious to get back out there,” he said. “I want to build up that Western New York boxing fan base in my corner.”

Falls boxer Casal
signs with X-Cel

By Miguel Rodriguez
NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

Niagara Falls boxer Nick Casal has signed a promotional agreement with Nick Garone of XCel Worldwide Promotions.

Casal, 23, fought on Garone's fight card in Buffalo last June, making quick work of journeyman Shad Howard in three rounds to improve to 19-4-1 with 15 KOs.

Casal won his first 14 pro fights, 10 via knockout. Then out-of-the-ring mistakes — beginning with a victory in his 11th fight that was turned into a no-contest after he tested positive for cocaine — affected the light welterweight's in-ring performances to the point where he was dropped by his big-time manager Shelly Finkel, who has managed the likes of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Fernando Vargas.

Although Casal's dominant display last June came against a fighter with a career mark of 13-15-3, Casal did enough to convince Garone to ink the former decorated amateur to a deal. Terms weren't disclosed.

"Nick Casal has all the natural talent you could hope for," Garone said. "But as he found out in his last few fights, that's only part of the equation. Training and dedication have to be there as well. I've had a long talk with him and we've come to an agreement to get him back where he belongs in boxing: as one of the hottest and most exciting young prospects in the entire sport."

Garone has a history with managing Western New York boxers. He guided the career of former Buffalo middleweight contender Ross Thompson from 1999-2003. Garone was in Thompson's corner when he fought Vargas for the world championship in August 2000.

Casal will be among the local boxers featured on Garone's Nov. 6 card at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. His opponent is still to be determined. For ticket information, visit championsofboxing.com.

X-Cel Worldwide’s Garone Signs
“Hands of Gold” Nick Casal

By Bob Caico

Promoter Nick Garone of X-Cel Worldwide has proudly signed heavy-handed Niagara Falls, New York, super lightweight prospect Nick “Hands of Gold” Casal (19-4-1, 15 KOs) to a multi-year promotional deal.

“Nick Casal has all the natural talent you could hope for,” admits Garone. “But as he found out in his last few fights, that’s only part of the equation. Training and dedication have to be there as well. I’ve had a long talk with him and we’ve come to an agreement to get him back where he belongs in boxing: as one of the hottest and most exciting young prospects in the entire sport.”

Casal has moved back to his hometown of Niagara Falls and is once again trained by his father, Ray, at the family gym. “Nick Garone treated us real well during the last card in Buffalo so we are excited to be part of X-Cel Worldwide,” said the proud father.

Garone says that part of his plan to bring Casal back to contention is to feature him in a series of shows in the Buffalo/Niagara area where boxing is making a big come back. “Nick (Garone) works hard for his kids and we believe that is what Nick (Casal) needs right now to get his career back on track,” said Ray Casal. Casal will fight at 140 pounds where all parties concerned believe is his best weight.

“When a young fighter hits a rough patch like that and battles some personal problems in and out of the ring, you need to bring him back slowly and help him remind himself why everyone was so high on his potential. And you do that by putting him in the right fights and by letting him feed off the energy of his fans and their dedication,” said Garone.

Casal’s first appearance under the X-Cel Worldwide promotional banner is scheduled for November 6th in Buffalo, NY, with an opponent yet to be announced. Also to appear on the card in Buffalo are Meacher Major (16-3-1) and Dorin Spivey (35-6) who will be vying for the NABA lightweight belt.

Buffalo’s fast rising prospect Guillermo Sanchez (10-0) will battle Jose L. Guzman (5-5-1) in an eight round contest for the NYS featherweight title. Kenny Abril (9-3-1) of Rochester, Lionel Thompson (1-0), Excell Holmes (1-0) and Greg Brady (debut) of Buffalo will round out the slate.
