BOXING: Casal will fight Fernandez

By Nate Beutel
Niagara Gazette

NIAGARA FALLS — After more than a month of searching, Nick Casal finally has an opponent for the main event of next month’s Road to Redemption card in Buffalo.

The Niagara Falls boxer will meet Christopher Fernandez of Salt Lake City in an eight-round 140-pound light welterweight bout Nov. 6 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

“I opted to take him because he’s a credible opponent — a step up, a big step up,” Casal said Tuesday after a workout. “He’s only lost to his better opponents.”

Fernandez, 33, owns a record of 18-7-1, including two first-round knockouts in his last two bouts. The 5-foot-9 right-hander is “a brawler,” according to Casal’s father and trainer Ray Casal.

“I’m preparing for a 12-rounder even though it’s only eight rounds because I know this one might last until the later rounds,” the younger Casal said. “That’s why this camp, I’m training morning and evening to build up my endurance.”

Casal, 23, is 19-4-1 in his professional career, including a third-round knockout of journeyman Shad Howard last June at the Convention Center. This bout will be the 5-foot-7 right-hander’s first under X-Cel Worldwide promoter Nick Garone.

“I’m excited to have Nick with me and I’m looking forward to this being a real solid win,” Garone said. “Fernandez is a tough opponent — not a pushover. A win would get Nick in the regional rankings, setting the stage for 2010 when he could possibly fight for one of those belts.”

Tickets for the card are available at championsofboxing.com or 877-77CLICK. You can also purchase them at Casal’s Boxing Club or by calling 990-3112. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $45 for reserved and $65 for ringside.

“I want to see more and more of my people come out and cheer me on,” Casal said.

Garone, who owns a home in Youngstown, added, “We’re really looking for the people of Niagara Falls and Western New York to come out and support their hometown guy.”
