Spivey - Major Photo Report

Photo: Bob Caico, Jr.Veteran Dorin Spivey of Portsmith, VA captured the NABA lightweight title with a fourth round stoppage against Meacher Major of the Bahamas. Spivey (36-6, 29 KOs) dropped Major (16-4-1), twice in round two, the second one just before the bell sounded. Both boxers fought a spirited third round, trading bombs on each other and taking turns shaking the other one up. In the fourth, Spivey unloaded a booming right hand that hurt Major and after a flurry of unanswered punches referee Charlie Fitch rightfully called off the action at :52.

The 36-year-old Spivey was very emotional after the win. “I am on cloud nine right now, it’s like a dream for me. I have had so many ups and downs in my career; so much frustration and jerked around so much. The difference now is that I have a team that believes in me.” Spivey was working with Pernell Whitaker but now has veteran John Hunter as his coach and he feels this will get him on track. “I am in the best shape I have ever been in and this was the biggest win of my career and I needed it,” said Spivey.

Guillermo Sanchez (11-0) of Buffalo captured the NYS super featherweight belt with an 8-round unanimous decision over Jose Guzman (5-6-1) of the Bronx. The southpaw Sanchez scored a knockdown with a right left combination at 2:47 of round one. Sanchez controlled the action for rest of the contest including another knockdown in the seventh and coasted to the decision by scores of 79-72 and 79-71 twice.

Junior welterweight Nick Casal (20-4-1) of Niagara Falls, NY scored an 8-round unanimous decision over tough Christopher Fernandez (18-8-1) of Salt Lake City, Utah. The battle was a rough and tumble contest as each boxer had to take time out for low blows. Fernandez was cut over the left eye in round one, which was hard to determine if it was from a punch or a clash of heads from the close in fighting. In round two, Casal landed a perfect left hook that almost dropped Fernandez. From the sixth round on, Casal landed pretty left right combinations that sealed the deal and the judges scored it 80-72 and 79-73 twice.

Welterweight Broderick Antoine of Troy, NY gained a split decision over Geoffert Spruiell of Pueblo, CO. The closeness of the bout reflects in their records also as both boxers now stand at 8-8. Scores were 77-75, 80-72 and 76-77.

Light heavyweight Lionell Thompson of Buffalo won a shutout unanimous decision over Mike Montoya of Colorado Springs in a 4-round match. Thompson improves to 2-0 while Montoya drops to 2-1-1.

Mike’s brother Joey Montoya (2-0-1) was held to a draw by Excell Holmes (1-0-1) of Buffalo in the opening 4-round battle. The heavyweights split on each of the judges’ scorecards 38-38.

The very competitive card was promoted by Nick Garone of X-Cel Worldwide at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in downtown Buffalo, NY.
